Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya, 3700 Philippines.
It is a new school, it was opened in June 2016 with a total enrolment of more
or less than 1 thousand students. It has some sections, such as STEM, ABM,

Academic Support System
Academic support system in SM SHS is constant
remediation for academically challenged students, trainings, and seminars for teachers.
Teaching System
The teachers in SM SHS often using English rather than Tagalong to teach
the students, and mostly the students understood everything what their teachers
said or talked about. That’s because English is their second language, so
almost all of them understood and tend to use English. Then when I observed the
class in “English” subject, they didn’t learn the “English language” but other
material such as “Media Information and Literacy” but full in English language.
The teachers or students should and have to talk in English.
Materials and Other Learning Sources
There
are many sources that used in SM SHS, In English or MIL subjects, there are
textbook and internet. In the textbook, it is about the explanation of the materials
and also a workbook for the students to practice or doing their exercise. The teachers
also use internet to provide the students for more and clear information, such
as data, pictures, and videos.
The
strength point of SM SHS, they provided every classes with a set of flat TV and
speaker as projector. It’s really easy for the teachers to teach and explain to
the students about the materials by showing them through the projector. The
students also can use the TV to help them showing their works to the teachers.
Here is the book that I taught.
Measurement and Evaluation System
The
evaluation system in this school is similar in Indonesia. They have 2 section
of evaluation. First is for middle term evaluation, and then for the second is
for the end of the semester or final term evaluation. The way the teachers
collecting the students’ score with every day score and also added with their
middle and final evaluation score.
Curriculum
Saint Mary’s Senior High School is
following the K-12 curriculum, it based on Republic Act number 10533 or
enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013.
Teaching Plan
The
teaching plan or Learning Strategies in SM SHS is the strategies that will be teachers’
guide to teach the students. In the learning strategies will have some
strategies for the teachers to engage the students or some exciting practices
for the students to do the exercises. Here is one of my teaching plans.

Teaching Method
The teaching
method in Saint Mary’s Senior High School is quite similar with Indonesia. The teachers
usually use lecture method, the teachers will be the center of teaching and
learning process. The teachers also use students’ center, the teachers will ask
some questions to some of the students and the students will answer and explain
briefly with their opinion. The teachers usually use the technology to make the
lesson more interesting and make the students engage and excited.
Learning Materials and Innovation
The teachers
use the material on the book only but they will look for the other sources such
as internet, and make it easier to understand for the students. The teachers
give a lot of pictures or videos about the material and take it as the sources
of their lesson.
Sources of Learning and Technology
There are many sources that the teachers can use, such as textbook, pictures, videos from “Youtube”, and other data from internet. The technologies are such as TV and the Speaker.
Authentic Assessment
There are 2
kinds of assessments in the classroom, the activeness and the written
assessment of the students. In measuring or scoring the activeness of the
students, the teachers usually give random questions to the students by using
some strategies, so the students will be not nervous. The teachers measure the
comprehension of the students about lesson. Meanwhile in written assessment,
the teachers make some questions and then they need to make sure whether the
students can answer the questions correctly or not. In order to the student
will have the same questions for their written assessment.

The

-Teaching Practice
Procedures of teaching
In the first,
second, and third time of my practicum teaching, I used “Pick A Number”
strategy to asked some questions related to the material. One of the student
will pick a random number from 1-10 and if she/he choose number 9, I will start
count the students and the student who get number 9 will answer my question. It
worked really well because the students were really excited.
Time Management and Organizing Activities
The allocation of
time for every class is different, it spent 1-2 hours. I had 3 classes to
teach, in a week I had 8 practicum teaching times. If I had long time for
teaching it was easier for me, because I had much time to explain and the
students can do their exercise slowly. But if I had short time for teaching it
was quite hard for me and also the students because the material of my subject
“Media Information Literacy” is quite hard.
Problem Solving
My problem are the materials that I taught, it were new for me and quite hard, because I never learned it yet in my SHS. So, to solve the problem, I had to learn the materials really well.
Classroom Management
It was quite easy to manage my
class, because my students are teenager and they understood already what their
teachers wanted. Here are some pictures of me while teaching in the classroom.
-Summary and Suggestions
Purpose of Practicum
The purposes from my teaching
practicum are :
1. To improve my speaking skill
in English;
2. To improve my teaching skill;
3. To learn new culture;
4. To make myself become an
independent person.
Procedures of Practicum
There are 4 stages that must be
followed by the participants:
1. Observation
2. Teaching Assistant
3. Teaching Practice
4. Reflection and Lesson Learned
I already
finished all of those stages and I can feel the improvement in myself. My speaking
skill, my teaching skill, the new culture that I learned, and also become an
independent person. Thank you so much for SEAMEO, my University that is Lambung
Mangkurat University, Saint Mary’s University and Saint Mary’s Senior High
School.
Outcomes of Practicum
1. Make my English skills better
2. Make my speaking skills
better
3. Learn new culture and also
system of education
4. More independent
The Challenge of Practicum
As I mentioned before in my problem and also as the challenge of this teaching practicum is the subjects that I never learned before in my country. In my country, Indonesia, the students in Senior High School haven’t learned that subject. So, it was really challenging for me to learn and teach it to the students in the same time.
Overall Impression
I really thank to my God, my parents, family and friends, my University, SEAMEO, Saint Mary’s University and also SM Senior High School gave me this opportunity to get new experiences life abroad and also get many new things to learn.
Suggestions for Future Improvement
Maybe the subject that
participants will get should fit with their field or major.
Thank you so much.
